Defender Glitches?

Hi Fred, Have been a Plus subscriber for several years and really enjoy all the great tips.

I am running XP home SP2.  I was using Windows spyware blocker and recently upgraded to Windows Defender (beta).  I was able to download and install the definition updates until last week when I installed a new Windows Updater file.  I have been trying to install Definition Update 1.14.1353.2 for BETA Windows Defender (KB915597).  My computer says that it has been downloaded and installed successfully but it keeps coming back as an available update.

Also, checking Windows Defender, it says that the definitions have not been updated for 60 days.  I tried running the update in Windows defender and it says that everything is up to date.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Windows Defender twice.  I also tried cleaning out my C:\WINDOWS\TEMP folder but one Windows Defender related file could not be removed as it was "in use by a program" even though Windows Defender was uninstalled at the time.

Is it possible that there is a problem related to the new Windows Updater I installed last week?  I have not tried anything with this as yet as I am not sure where to go for it.

I have tried everything I can think of.  Any suggestions? Thanks, Bob Hurter

I suspect the problem is with Windows Defender, which indeed is still beta, and undoubtedly has some bugs. Several readers have had trouble with it; unlike the previous version--- Microsoft Antispyware--- which was much more stable. If you can find a copy of the older version (it's not on the Microsoft site any more) you may have better luck.

That said, there are a number of "looping" issues which can mess up Windows Update, causing it to re-download the same item again and again; and have other trouble too. Although the following aren't specific to Windows Defender, they discuss the same *kinds* of Update problems, and so may well work on the Defender issue as well:
